2022 Order of Canada Recipient Art Bergmann defies categorization, standing among the great musicians who transcend labels. As a singer, instrumentalist, and songwriter, he stands shoulder to shoulder with legends like Lou Reed and Neil Young and holds his own alongside later icons such as Paul Westerberg and Bob Mould.
Bergmann's musical journey began in 1977 with The Schmorgs, followed by The K-Tels in 1978, later renamed The Young Canadians. He then joined Los Popularos in 1981, producing a four-song EP. In 1984, the formation of Poisoned led to the creation of two demo tapes and a 6-song EP, produced by industry giants Bob Rock and Paul Hyde.
In 1988, Bergmann signed with Duke Street Records, marking the start of a remarkable solo career. His debut album, "Crawl With Me," produced by John Cale, garnered attention. This was followed by "Sexual Roulette" (1989) and the self-titled "Art Bergmann" (1991). The pinnacle came with the release of "What Fresh Hell Is This?" in 1995, earning him a Juno Award for Best Alternative Album in 1996. Two more albums, "Design Flaw" (1998) and "Vultura Freeway" (2000), solidified his status before he took a hiatus, relocating to an Alberta farm and retiring from music.
Art's music can't be pigeonholed as 'punk,' though it traces its roots there. He was 'alternative' before the term became diluted. Each of his albums defies categorization, showcasing his diverse talents.
2023’s “ShadowWalk” is Art Bergmann’s tenth studio full length album released under his own name and is the follow up to his well-received Polaris Music Prize Long Listed nominated record “Late Stage Empire Dementia” which came out in 2021 on (weewerk).
“ShadowWalk” is Art’s ode to Sherri Decembrini, his late wife who passed away in the spring of 2022, which beautifully captures the darkness of grief and desolation
of loss and is a testament to their committed love in marriage for over 25 years. Featuring twelve new songs that are devastatingly honest and sonically compelling, they showcase a gifted song writer who is dealing with the loss of his great love and all the grief, anger and sorrowful emotions that come about as a result of such a devastating, soul crushing loss.
Art's activism extends beyond music. In 2020, The Order Of Canada honored him for his enduring contributions to the Canadian punk scene and his outspoken stance on social, gender, and racial issues.
